ABSTRACT
The influence of teaching methods and
class size on students’ achievement in Mathematics was the focus of this study.
A researcher-made mathematics student questionnaire (MSQ) and Mathematics
achievement test (MAT) were the instruments used in this study. The responses
on the MSQ were used as a parameter to classify the subjects into the three
factors investigated. A t-test statistical analysis on the student scores on MAT
showed that students exposed to lecture method with students activities and
students in small classes, achieved significantly (P< 0.05) better than
those taught by
lecture with teacher demonstration and those in large classes. Recommendations
made centred on the need to frequently give assignment and engage the students
in class activities strictly under the guide of the teacher.
INTRODUCTION
In the school system, the level of
achievement of students is to a great extent influenced by the level of interaction
between the teacher and the student. Where the level of interaction is low,
academic achievement may be stifled, but where the level of interaction is
high, achievement will receive a boost (Zoller, 1993).
